Plant Engineering Consultants, Inc. (PEC) is an international engineering company based in Chattanooga, Tennessee. PEC's designs and builds custom-engineered adjustable-speed AC and DC drive and drive systems. A leader in the fibers industry PEC has complete customer satisfaction as its goal.
The Challenge
Our challenge for this program was to create an employee handbook to detail PEC''s policies on attendance, job performance, personal injuries, and operational procedures.
Practices and decisions varied among departments. The company was new and many of the procedures needed to be developed.
The company was growing rapidly and the information needed to clearly document information and expectations and establish a legal foundation for personnel actions, and provide employees with ready answers to questions on administrative policy.
The Solution
Worked with management and employees to determine current operating practices and other routines that were working or not working for the company. This assessment also helped identify situations that could have established a precedence in the absence of written policy.
Reviewed industry procedures and practices and made recommendations for policy.
Administrative tools included job descriptions, policies and procedures, employee handbook. Forms, checklists and sample letters were also included in the package.
The Results
The Company implemented policies and procedures and trained employees in consistent Company standards and expectations.
Boosted employee morale and significantly reduced complaints of unfairness and favoritism. A Personnel Department was established to oversee administrative policies and employee benefits.
The administrative tools established a legal foundation for Company actions, clarified expectations in personnel matters, provided a basis for compliance with local, state and federal regulations, and created a more knowledgeable work force.
